The 2026 Solar Eclipse in Spain: Where, When, and How to Watch Safely
On 12 August 2026, mainland Spain becomes the primary destination on Earth for the first total solar eclipse to cross Europe in more than two decades. The Moon's shadow sweeps in from the Atlantic over Galicia in the late afternoon, crosses the northern half of the peninsula, and exits into the Mediterranean over the Balearic Islands as the Sun is setting. For a few minutes, day turns to night over Spanish cities that most travellers can reach without a long-haul flight.

Why Spain is the place to be on 12 August 2026
The path of totality — the narrow band where the Moon completely covers the Sun — crosses Iceland, briefly touches Greenland, and then makes landfall over northern Spain. Spain is the only major country in the path with easy travel access, warm August weather, and clear-sky climatology on its side. Portugal sees a partial eclipse only; France, Italy, and the UK are all outside the path of totality.

Best cities to watch the eclipse in Spain
A Coruña (Galicia)
A Coruña sits near the western entry of the path. Totality lasts roughly 1 minute 20 seconds around 20:29 local time (CEST), with the Sun only about 6° above the horizon. The advantage is the drama of a low-Sun totality over the Atlantic; the disadvantage is Galicia's Atlantic climatology, which brings a higher cloud probability than the interior. Coastal cliffs west of the city and elevated headlands give the clearest sightlines.
León and Palencia (Castilla y León)
The interior of Castilla y León offers the best combination of long totality and reliable weather. León sees around 1 minute 30 seconds of totality near 20:31 CEST with the Sun about 8° high. Cloud cover in this region in August is historically low. Wide plains and open skies make it a popular choice for large public viewing events.
Burgos
Burgos gets close to 1 minute 40 seconds of totality with slightly better Sun altitude than León. The city is straightforward to reach by high-speed rail from Madrid, and the surrounding countryside offers plenty of elevated viewing points. Consider it a strong all-round pick.
Zaragoza and the Ebro valley
Zaragoza sits deeper in the path and offers around 1 minute 45 seconds of totality near 20:33 CEST. The Ebro valley has some of the driest August climatology in mainland Spain, which pushes the odds of clear skies even higher. For travellers combining the eclipse with a broader Spain trip, Zaragoza balances weather, access, and infrastructure well.
Palma de Mallorca and the Balearics
The path of totality clips the Balearic Islands as the Sun sets over the Mediterranean. Totality is shorter and the Sun is only 1–3° above the horizon, which requires an unobstructed sea horizon. When conditions cooperate, a totality that ends with a sunset is spectacular. When they don't, low clouds on the horizon can cover the event entirely. Choose a west- or south-west-facing coast.

Confirm exact timing for your specific viewing location before the day — a few kilometres north or south of the centreline changes duration significantly.
Weather prospects
August in Spain generally favours clear skies, but the picture varies by region. The Ebro valley (Zaragoza and east) and the interior of Castilla y León historically show the lowest August cloud probability. Galicia and the Bay of Biscay coast are cloudier on average. Coastal Mediterranean sites are usually clear but occasionally see afternoon haze or low horizon cloud that matters when the Sun is close to the horizon.
If cloud cover looks marginal in the days before, having transport flexibility to move a few hundred kilometres along the path is the single most useful tool. Many experienced eclipse chasers pick their final spot 24–48 hours in advance based on forecasts.
How to watch safely
The only moment during a total solar eclipse when it is safe to look at the Sun without protection is during totality itself — the brief window when the Sun is completely covered. Every other phase of the eclipse, including 99% coverage just before and after totality, requires certified solar viewing glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 standard.
Regular sunglasses — even very dark ones — do not filter the infrared and ultraviolet radiation that damages the retina. Neither do smoked glass, photographic film, or CDs. Damage from unprotected viewing is often painless and only becomes apparent hours later.
