How Many Eclipse Glasses Does Your Event Need? A Practical Guide for 2026

The 2026 total solar eclipse on 12 August is shaping up to be one of the largest public astronomy events Europe has seen in a generation. Schools, museums, science centres, festivals, hotels, and local councils across Spain and France are already planning eclipse-viewing events. If you're organising one, the single most important logistical question is also the simplest: how many pairs of eclipse glasses do you need?

Getting this wrong in either direction has consequences. Too few and you have guests who can't safely watch the event — and a liability problem. Too many and you have unsold stock with no residual value after 12 August. Here's how to think through the number.

Start with your confirmed attendance

Your baseline is simple: one pair per person. Eclipse glasses are single-use personal protective equipment. They cannot be shared between two people watching simultaneously, and once worn they should not be redistributed to other users for hygiene and safety reasons.

If your event has 200 confirmed attendees, your minimum order is 200 pairs. That's your floor, not your target.

Add a buffer for walk-ins and attrition

Most outdoor eclipse events attract more people than registered in advance. A school event that sent home permission slips gets siblings showing up. A hotel eclipse morning attracts guests who didn't pre-register. A public viewing event in a plaza draws passers-by.

A standard buffer for public-facing events is 20–30% above confirmed attendance. For a 200-person event, order 240–260 pairs. For a 500-person event, order 600–650.

Also account for attrition: glasses get lost, sat on, or damaged before the event. For events where glasses are distributed in advance — for example, sent home with schoolchildren — build in a 10% replacement buffer on top of your attendance figure.

Consider whether glasses are a giveaway or a sale

Some event organisers distribute glasses as part of the ticket or registration. Others sell them on the day as a separate item. If you're selling, your order quantity needs to account for the fact that not every attendee will buy — typically 60–80% conversion for a paid item at a free event, higher if glasses are included in a package.

If you're bundling glasses with a hotel stay, tour package, or event ticket, treat it as one pair per booking and add your standard buffer.

Factor in staff and volunteers

Everyone present during the eclipse needs certified glasses — including your team. Staff, volunteers, security, photographers, and any media covering the event all need their own pairs. This group is frequently forgotten in initial order calculations and then scrambled for on the day.

Add one pair per staff member or volunteer to your order total.

Worked example

A science museum is planning a public eclipse viewing morning on 12 August 2026. They have 350 pre-registered visitors, expect roughly 80 walk-ins, and have 25 staff and volunteers on duty. They plan to distribute glasses as part of admission.

When to order

Eclipse glasses at event quantities — 200 pairs and above — need to be ordered with enough lead time for production confirmation, shipping, and any customs handling. For the 12 August 2026 eclipse, orders placed before the end of June ship with certainty from Exclipse's Rotterdam warehouse. Orders placed in July ship subject to availability.
