Why 2027 is exceptional
Most total solar eclipses last two to three minutes at their point of greatest duration. The 2026 European eclipse offers about 2 minutes 18 seconds of totality at its peak over the Atlantic. The 2024 North American eclipse peaked around 4 minutes 28 seconds. The 2027 eclipse blows past both: more than 6 minutes of totality along a track running through some of the clearest August skies on Earth.
The reason is a rare alignment: the Moon is near perigee (its closest point to Earth, appearing larger) while the Earth is near aphelion (its farthest point from the Sun, making the Sun appear smaller). The Moon's shadow moves slowly, and observers on the ground stay inside it for a very long time.
The path of totality
The Moon's shadow will make landfall over the Strait of Gibraltar and cross southern Spain briefly, before sweeping across the Mediterranean and into North Africa. The centreline passes through:
- Southern Spain (Cádiz, Málaga) — brief totality just after landfall
- Northern Morocco and the Strait — early-track viewing
- Northern Algeria and central Tunisia

Weather prospects
August in Egypt and Libya is essentially cloudless. Historical satellite data suggests cloud cover probability of under 5% along much of the North African centreline. This is one of the most weather-reliable eclipse tracks of the century — a striking contrast with the 2026 European track, which passes through regions with more variable August cloud cover.
What 6 minutes of totality actually feels like
Two minutes of totality goes by in a blur. Six minutes is a fundamentally different experience. You have time to look at the corona in detail, to notice colours along the horizon in every direction, to see planets and bright stars appear, to hear how the local wildlife responds, and to simply stand in the shadow of the Moon without rushing.
