Running an eclipse-day classroom session, step by step
For teachers across Europe, August 12, 2026 falls during the summer break for most school calendars — but for schools running summer programmes, science camps, or early autumn term planning, the 2026 total solar eclipse is a once-in-a-generation teaching opportunity. Here's how to run a safe, memorable eclipse-day session.
Step 1 — Plan weeks in advance, not days
Order certified eclipse glasses for every student well ahead of time. Demand for certified glasses rises sharply in the weeks before an eclipse, and you do not want to be sourcing safety equipment at the last minute. For larger groups, look into wholesale options that include documentation for your school's safety records.
Step 2 — Teach the safety routine before the day
Don't wait until eclipse day to explain how to use the glasses. A few days before, run a short session where students practise putting the glasses on, looking up, and removing them correctly — the "glasses on first, look second, turn away before removing" routine described in our Eclipse Safety Guide. Practising this in a calm classroom setting means it becomes automatic when excitement is high on the actual day.
Step 3 — Explain what students will actually see
Set expectations. Depending on your location, students may see a partial eclipse rather than totality — the sun will appear as a crescent rather than disappearing completely. Explain the difference clearly so nobody is disappointed, and so everyone understands that glasses must stay on for the entire partial phase regardless of how dramatic the change looks.
Step 4 — Build a simple science lesson around it
Tie the event into your curriculum. Younger students can learn about the relative positions of the sun, moon, and earth using simple models. Older students can explore why eclipses don't happen every month, what causes the path of totality to be so narrow, and how solar filters work at a physical level — connecting directly to the ISO 12312-2 standard that makes safe viewing possible.
Step 5 — Assign roles for the day
Designate a few responsible students or staff members to do a final glasses check immediately before viewing begins — looking for scratches, tears, or anything loose. Keep a few spare pairs on hand in case any glasses are found damaged on the day.
Step 6 — Capture the moment safely
If students want to photograph the eclipse on their phones, make sure any phone camera filters are properly fitted before pointing devices at the sun — and remind everyone that a phone filter protects the camera, not their eyes. Eclipse glasses must stay on regardless of whether someone is also using a phone filter.
Step 7 — Debrief afterwards
After the event, spend time discussing what students observed — the change in light, temperature, behaviour of animals or birds if noticeable, and how it felt to experience something so rare. This kind of reflection often becomes the part of the day students remember most.
With the right preparation, eclipse day can be one of the most memorable shared experiences a school can offer — as long as safety comes first.
