Where the 2026 Solar Eclipse Will Draw the Biggest Crowds in Spain — A Retailer's Guide
On 12 August 2026, the path of totality crosses mainland Spain from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean — passing through some of the country's most densely populated and heavily visited regions. For retailers, pharmacies, supermarkets, and event organisers, this is not just an astronomical event. It is a footfall event, and the locations where crowds gather will determine where eclipse glasses sell.
This guide covers the key locations along and near the totality path, the expected visitor volumes, and what that means for stocking decisions.
The path of totality across Spain
The Moon's shadow enters mainland Spain on the Atlantic coast over Galicia at around 20:26 local time, crosses through the northern interior, and exits via the Mediterranean coast near Castellón and Valencia before continuing to the Balearic Islands. The central corridor — roughly following a line through Burgos, Zaragoza, and the Ebro valley — is where totality is longest and conditions for viewing are best. Maximum totality duration reaches approximately 2 minutes and 18 seconds on the centreline.
Because this eclipse occurs close to sunset — with the Sun as low as 4–11 degrees above the western horizon depending on location — a clear, unobstructed view to the west is essential. This single factor will drive large numbers of people away from cities and toward open coastal locations, hilltops, and elevated viewpoints, concentrating demand in predictable ways.
Key cities inside or very close to the path of totality include A Coruña, Oviedo, Gijón, Santander, Valladolid, Burgos, Logroño, Zaragoza, Tarragona, Castellón de la Plana, and Valencia.
Where the crowds will be largest
Eclipse chasers and casual viewers alike will concentrate in a small number of predictable locations. Retailers in or near these areas face the highest demand.
Zaragoza and the Ebro valley sit near the centre of the totality path and offer among the longest durations of totality on the Spanish mainland, combined with low cloud risk in August — the Ebro valley is one of the driest and clearest regions in Europe in summer. Zaragoza is a city of 700,000 people with strong transport links from Madrid, Barcelona, and the French border. Visitor numbers will be significant, and the surrounding towns and motorway service areas will see substantial traffic from people driving in from outside the totality zone.
Castile and León — Valladolid, Burgos, and the interior represent one of the most underrated retail opportunities on the path. This region combines solid totality durations — Burgos gets approximately 1 minute 43 seconds, Valladolid around 1 minute 28 seconds — with some of the best predicted cloud statistics anywhere on the path. Eclipse meteorologists have identified Castile and León as having among the highest probability of clear skies on eclipse day. Critically, routes from Salamanca through Zamora and into Valladolid are predicted to be among the quietest approach roads to the path — meaning this region will attract experienced eclipse chasers specifically trying to avoid congestion. Supermarkets, pharmacies, and petrol stations along these routes face real and relatively predictable demand.
The Basque Country and Cantabria — including Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, and Santander — sit on or very close to the northern edge of the totality path. These are densely populated urban areas with large tourism bases in August. Bilbao is the fifth largest city in Spain and sits inside the path. Cloud risk is higher on the Atlantic coast than inland, but visitor volumes will be among the largest anywhere on the path — and uncertainty about weather will drive panic-buying behaviour in the days before the event.
A Coruña and Galicia mark where totality first crosses the Spanish mainland. Galicia attracts heavy domestic tourism in summer and the eclipse will add a significant additional draw. A Coruña gets approximately 1 minute 16 seconds of totality. Supermarkets, pharmacies, and kiosks along the Galician coast and in A Coruña itself face concentrated demand in the days before 12 August. Cloud risk on the Atlantic coast is a genuine factor, but footfall will be high regardless of forecast — people who have travelled to see the eclipse still need glasses even if clouds appear.
The Mediterranean coast — Castellón, Tarragona, and Valencia is where the totality path exits the Spanish mainland, and it represents potentially the highest walk-in demand of anywhere on the path. This stretch of coastline is among the most heavily visited in Europe in August — packed with domestic and international tourists. Castellón de la Plana sits approximately two-thirds of the way to the centreline and gets around 1 minute 34 seconds of totality. Tarragona also gets approximately 1 minute. Valencia, near the southern edge of the path, gets around 1 minute in the city centre. The totality path on the east coast runs between Vilanova i la Geltrú in the north, close to Barcelona, and Cullera, just south of Valencia — meaning the entire Costa Daurada and Costa del Azahar corridor is inside or very close to the path. The sheer density of tourists already present in August makes this the highest-volume retail zone on the path.
The Balearic Islands — particularly Mallorca and Menorca — also fall within the path of totality as the eclipse moves out over the Mediterranean. Palma gets approximately 1 minute 36 seconds of totality. August is peak season for the Balearics, and the islands will attract significant eclipse tourism on top of existing visitor volumes. Retailers on the islands face genuine demand.
Southern France as a feeder market
The French regions closest to the Spanish border — the Basque coast, Toulouse, and Perpignan — see up to 99% eclipse coverage but not totality. A significant proportion of eclipse-aware French visitors will cross the border to reach totality. This creates demand not just in Spain but in the French border towns and motorway routes leading south, and for Spanish retailers near the border crossings at Irun, Pamplona, and La Jonquera.
Madrid and Barcelona — the feeder cities
Madrid and Barcelona will each see a deep partial eclipse — Madrid gets 99.96% coverage, Barcelona approximately 99% — but neither city sees totality. That means no corona, no sudden darkness, no temperature drop. With Barcelona's population of 1.7 million and Madrid's 3.5 million just outside the path, there could be intense pressure on the road system in the hours before and after the eclipse. Retailers along the major routes out of both cities — the AP-2 toward Zaragoza from Barcelona, the A-2 from Madrid toward Zaragoza, and the AP-7 along the coast — will see significant traffic from people driving toward totality.
What this means for stocking decisions
The distribution of crowds along the totality path suggests a clear hierarchy of opportunity:
High volume, high certainty: Zaragoza and the Ebro valley, the Mediterranean coastal corridor from Tarragona to Valencia, and the major Basque and Cantabrian cities. These locations combine large existing populations or tourist bases with direct access to totality — demand here is as close to guaranteed as eclipse retail gets.
High probability, lower competition: Castile and León — Valladolid, Burgos, and the surrounding region. Best predicted cloud statistics on the path, quieter roads, and less retail competition than the coastal zones. An underserved opportunity for retailers willing to stock ahead of the curve.
High volume, weather-dependent: A Coruña and the Atlantic coast. Footfall will be high regardless of weather — panic-buying behaviour will be pronounced if forecasts look uncertain in the days before.
Secondary opportunity: Smaller towns along the totality corridor — particularly those with good motorway access. Service stations, petrol station shops, convenience stores, and small supermarkets along the A-2, AP-68, AP-7, and A-8 motorways will see eclipse glass demand from people stopping on the way to viewing locations.
When demand peaks — and why early stocking matters
Consumer demand for eclipse glasses historically follows a sharp curve: minimal until approximately three to four weeks before the event, then accelerating rapidly in the final two weeks, with panic-buying in the final days. Retailers who stock in July capture the early-aware buyer and are positioned for the peak. Retailers who wait until August risk empty shelves — certified eclipse glasses cannot be sourced and shipped domestically in 48 hours.
